Four years ago a group of Elk Rapids area people found themselves wondering why such an art-minded community didn’t have a juried fine-art show, as many other Northwest Michigan towns do. This shared interest led to Art Rapids!, one of Michigan’s finest art shows. The first Art Rapids! in 2006 was successful beyond all expectations, and last June’s third Art Rapids! was an even greater success. Now, as we begin work on the 2009 show, we have wonderful news to share and a vision to offer.

The News

From the start, the success of Art Rapids! has allowed us to award scholarships to graduating seniors of Elk Rapids High School.  In 2008 we not only doubled the graduating-senior scholarship, but we offered a new scholarship to an undergraduate to attend fine-art related classes or an art camp to supplement their high school courses.  In early 2008, we also started a School Assistance Program of grants for arts-education projects in Elk Rapids Schools, and now we can increase the total of these grants for 2009 to $3000.  And in addition, this year for the first time we have allocated $3000 for gifts to the Elk Rapids community.  These funds could be used for a musical performance, a piece of art, or another item or activity which would enhance the cultural life in our community.

The Vision

The Art Rapids! Board believes that by enlisting the support of art-minded people like you, we can continue to support the Elk Rapids Schools and provide the community at large with interesting art and arts events. Through the success of past art fairs and gifts from community members, we are very gratified to have accumulated the funds to do these 2009 projects. Of course, the continued success of the organization depends upon annual giving from art-minded citizens.

We invite you, as a friend of the arts in Elk Rapids, to become a contributor to  Art Rapids!  Your membership gift of only $20.00 a year is tax deductible, and will enable us to strengthen our scholarship program, continue the Elk Rapids School Assistance Program, and enhance all community arts programs in Elk Rapids.
